Family Time Studies Work with one another to memorize 2 Commandments per day. 1. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make for yourself an idol. 3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 10. You shall not covet. Week 1: Monday: When has there been a time when you have allowed someone or something become more important than God? Tuesday: How can we as a family be better at taking a Sabbath? Wednesday: How are some ways that mom and dad feel honored? Thursday: What was Jesus suggesting in Matthew 5:22? NOTE: In Jesus' day Raca meant "good for nothing" and Fool meant one who is godless, rejecting salvation. Friday: Why would God place stealing and lying in a list of bad things with something as terrible as murder? Saturday: What does it mean to covet? Week 2: Monday: What are some other possible "gods" that people place before the One True God? Tuesday: What does God promise Israel in Psalm 81:13-14 if they put Him first? Read these verses again placing your name in the verses each time the names "my people or Israel" occurs and substitute "their" with "your". Wednesday: What are some things we can do to keep ourselves from placing anything or anyone else before God? Thursday: In Exodus 34:14 God is referred to as a jealous God. What does it mean that God is jealous? Friday: What does it mean to have a real, personal & intimate relationship with God or to be "one with the Lord"? 1 Corinthians 6:17 Saturday: According to Romans 10:9 what is required of us to be save from eternal hell to eternity with God? Week 3: Monday: What are the two ways that people misuse the name of God? What are some examples of this that you've seen recently? Tuesday: What is a "euphemism?" Do you think Ex. 20:7 applies to the use of euphemisms corresponding to God's name? Wednesday: What does James say about the use of foul language in chapter 3 and verses 9-12? Thursday: What can we do to prevent ourselves from misusing God's name? Friday: Look over the names of God on the back of this page and pick one that you really like and share why it's special to you. Monday: In Mark 2:23-28 Did Jesus and His disciples violate the 4th commandment?
Tuesday: The word Sabbath is a translation of the Hebrew word Shabbat. What does it mean?
Wednesday: What event did God use as a basis for establishing the Sabbath? (Ex. 20:11)
Thursday: Why do some religions celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday when we have our day of rest and worship on Sunday?
Friday: When was the Sabbath (7th day) first observed as a Holy Day?
Saturday: Why was the Sabbath instituted and is it still relevant for Christians today?
Week 5: Monday: What 2 commands does Paul give children in Eph. 6:1-3? What are the 2 promises associated with obeying these commands? Tuesday: According to Deuteronomy 21:18-21 what was to be the punishment for a rebellious son of Jewish parents? Why do you think that punishment for a rebellious Jewish child was so harsh? Wednesday: What does it mean to honor you father and mother (by Pastor Mark's definition)? How are you doing at this one? How long does this command apply to a child? Thursday: What does Colossians 3:20 say will happen if we obey our parents? When Paul says obey your parents in everything, do you think there are limitations to "everything?" See Eph. 6:1 Friday: In addition to pleasing God, what are some benefits to obeying your parents? Expand on the promise given in Eph. 6, "it may go well with you" what are some examples of this benefit? Saturday: What does Prov. 6:20-23 say will happen when you follow your father's commands and your mother's teachings? Week 6: Monday: What kind of murder is Ex. 21:29 describing? Is the penalty different of the same as an intentional murder? Tuesday: Why would a person murder another person? What might be some motives? Wednesday: What does Jesus say about murder in 1 Jn. 3:15? What does Rev. 21:8 say about one who murders? Thursday: What does Psalm 139:13-16 and Jeremiah 1:4-5 say about God's view of the Psalmist and the prophet Jeremiah while they were embryos? What does the law of Ex. 21:22-23 say regarding God's view of a human embryo? Friday: Is there anyone whom you've had feelings of hatred toward? If so, take some time to confess that to God and ask him to give you a heart of compassion for that person. Then pray for them. Saturday: Is murder different from the death penalty or killing in times of war. Week 8: Monday: List all the words you can think of that mean "to steal." Have you ever been guilty of any of those? Tuesday: Read Luke 10:25-37 and discuss the many ways that the robbery and beating of the victim impacted others. What would you say was the Samaritan's perspective on his wealth? Wednesday: Read Exodus 22:1, Proverbs 6:30-31. What is the OT penalty for stealing? Does Proverbs suggest that it is ok under certain circumstances? Thursday: In Malachi 3:8-12 God (via the prophet) tells Israel that by withholding their tithe, they steal from God. When we steal there are consequences, but what is the result when God's people give back to him what he has required? Friday: What does 1 Timothy 6:10 say about money? How does this principle apply to the 8th commandment? Saturday: In what ways do you think obedience to the 8th commandment can bring "freedom" to your life?
Week 9: Monday: What is a white lie? Does the Bible say that "white lies" are ok? Tuesday: What were the 3 reasons Pastor Mark gave for this command being so important to follow? 1) Lying is of S_________ K__________ 2) Lying D________ R__________ 3) Lying is Un-C__________. Wednesday: In Proverbs 6:16-18 it says that God hates 6 things. In addition to lying what are the other 5 and what do they tell you about the nature of lying? Thursday: According to Revelations 21:8 what is the penalty for those who live their lives as liars? Friday: How does a lying tongue destroy relationships? Saturday: What was it that Jesus said which makes lying so un-Christian?
